IBAN (International Bank Account Number)
The IBAN standardizes bank account numbers globally. Up to 34 characters long, it includes a two-letter country code, two check digits, and the domestic account number.
BIC / SWIFT (Bank Identifier Code)
BIC codes identify specific financial institutions across 200+ countries, routing payments to the appropriate bank and branch.
National Clearing Codes
Domestic systems often use specialized routing codes embedded inside IBANs:
- Bankleitzahl (BLZ) in Germany and Austria.
- Sort Code (6 digits) in the United Kingdom.
- CAB / Guichet in France.
- Registreringsnummer (4 digits) in Denmark.
